Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

A simple, non-invasive test that compares blood pressure in your ankles and arms to assess how well blood is flowing to your legs and detect peripheral artery disease.

What is an Ankle-Brachial Index Test?

The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) test is a simple, non-invasive procedure that measures the blood pressure in your ankles compared to your arms. This ratio helps determine how well blood is flowing to your legs and feet, making it a valuable tool for diagnosing peripheral artery disease (PAD).

At Colonial Heart, we use advanced Doppler ultrasound technology to ensure accurate results, allowing for early detection of circulation problems that may affect mobility or lead to more serious cardiovascular issues.

Why It's Important

The ABI test is essential for identifying and managing vascular conditions such as:

  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Claudication (leg pain while walking)
  • Poor wound healing in the feet or legs
  • Circulatory problems in diabetic patients
  • Early detection of systemic atherosclerosis

What to Expect

The test is quick, comfortable, and typically completed within 15–20 minutes. You'll lie down while blood pressure cuffs are placed on your arms and ankles. A Doppler device is used to listen to blood flow and measure pressure readings.

Results are immediately available and interpreted by Dr. Prewitt to assess circulation and determine if further testing or treatment is needed.
